The United States was betrayed in the Senate Chambers today, February 5, 2020. This is my visceral response to the injustice that occurred today.
THE OBITUARY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Lower the flags to half mast,
America the Beautiful has been gutted,
Its word emptied of all meaning,
There is no jubilant throng singing,
“Glory, glory Hallelujah!”
Our nation’s heroes rise
From their earthen graves enraged
And cry out to the heavens,
“Have our cruel deaths been in vain?!”
Their ghosts march en masse
On the nation’s capital to haunt
Those who have betrayed our nation
In the Chamber of the Senate.
Abraham Lincoln holds his head in his hands,
And weeps bitterly for his nation.
All he endured to protect the Union from traitors
Has been destroyed in a single vote.
Our Founding Fathers who had sacrificed all
Watch in horror as the orange faced buffoon
Mounts the steps of the Capital with
The beloved Constitution of the United States
Attached to the bottom of his shoe
Like used toilet paper.
Tomorrow morning in newspapers
Throughout the nation the obituary is written,
“The United States of America,
Born on July 4, 1776, died on February 5, 2020
In the Senate, Washington D.C.

As a past democrat and not a vote for trump in 2016 (third party) I could not disagree with you more.. Thedemocratic Party Amd madia are corrupt to the core beyond reason.
Trump has done some good things for the country, his style is course at times but his state of the union was well done . Nancy Pelosi acted like a kindergartner . No . I take that back. Kidnergartners are more mature.

Hi Patty. Thanks for your response. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion. I am not naïve. As one who spent part of his life growing up in Chicago, I am well aware of political corruption. In contrast with your position, I have found nothing but corruption in the present incarnation of the republican party, a corruption that far exceeds even Mayor Daley’s Cook County Democrats in the 1960’s. What is far more alarming to me is that the policies of the republican party and trump are in direct contradition of what Jesus teaches in the Gospel. For example, in Matthew 25:31-46 it is written, ““When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, 36naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous* will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. It was not always so with republicans, but that all changed when Gingrich and his ilk took over the party back in the 1990’s. As for trump’s State of the Union, if you follow closely, as I have had, everything he has done, everything he said in the State of the Union was a lie. I watched very carefully the trial of trump in the House of Representatives. The evidence against trump was irrefutably conclusive and he deserved to be impeached for his crimes against the United States. It was clear that mcconnell was not going to hold anything resembling a trial in the Senate. mcconnell rigged the whole thing so that it ended up being a Kangaroo Court. I know that none of this will sway your opinion and I do not expect you to do so. However, there is no way that I, who promised to the Archbishop at my ordination, to be faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, can morally support or condone anything that trump and his republican party has done over the past three years. I greatly fear for the safety and freedom of our nation, hence the poem.
